Fur

Fur dominated the F/W 09 designer collections with luxurious pelts translating from apparel to major accessory classifications including bags, cold weather categories and even footwear. Subdued palettes of taupe grey, beige, dark brown and black were the staples with an occasional pop of color elevating the mix

Chains

Designers’ obsession with chains continues this fall with a hard-edged but delicate approach. Chain-strap bags and belts are still a “must-have" in bright yellow-gold tones, while darker metal links are apparent on shoes and jewelry. Circular shapes in gradated sizes and tangled styles update this ongoing trend, remaining the staples for this coming fall.

Antiqued

Designers echoed their use of natural elements from their F/W 09 runway collections in their jewelry creations, belts and footwear for the season. Necklaces and belts with floral motifs looked like they were picked from a treasure trove. Knit items became an integral component to accessory categories from cold weather pieces like fine-gauge knit hats and wooly crocheted scarves to bulky boot sock linings. The notion of creature comforts and the security cocoon-like wrapping was prevalent throughout F/W 09 collections.

Formal opera length gloves are ubiquitous this fall as a slew of designers sent models down the runway with their own interpretations of the season’s most essential cold weather accessory. Not just for brisk evenings at the theatre, the elbow-length glove was also seen paired with knee-length skirts for a glamorous daytime look. Shooties continue as the “must-have” shoe of the fall season. Designers juxtaposed feminine and masculine appeal by pairing booties with cocktail dresses and abbreviated skirt lengths. The choked silhouette highlighted the use of integrated materials and leathers, as well as color and embellishments

Exotics

Authentic and faux exotics are here to stay despite the current economic doldrums. For fall, designers incorporated exquisite skins like croc, lizard and snake for shoes, bags and small leather goods without hesitation. Palettes appeared in more subdued earth tones with an occasional pop of color as seen at Christian Dior.

Accodion bag

Vintage-inspired handbags inspire new silhouettes for fall. Designers incorporated short straps, flaps and top-zip closures into handbag designs along with double or triple gusset details that allowed for additional expansion. Ultra-soft or rigid leathers in neutral palettes are best for a modern sophisticated take or pop colors for a younger contemporary feel.

The sash belt

With designers turning attention to the cinched waist, sash belts emerged as the new waist-defining element for the fall season. Satin, velvet and pleated leather sashes are knotted or tied into draping or understated bows. For a more casual look, the sash belt is styled over everything from glamorous cocktail dresses and hourglass-shaped suits to coats and trousers.
